If you are a dog owner and you find your puppy’s chewing extremely frustrating, read on. Yes, it can be nerve-racking, but it is also a natural part of their development. It is how they explore the world around them.
Moreover, just like babies, puppies teeth, which can hurt quite a bit, and chewing minimizes the pain that comes from it. That, too, is natural and there is nothing we can do about it.
Okay, so that’s that, but it does not mean that there is nothing you can do, there is: With a few simple steps you can make sure that your shoes and furniture survive your puppy’s teething phase. Firstly, simply put your most beloved items out of your puppy’s reach.
Moreover, you should be mindful of not giving your dog a toy that could be confused with other household items. As an example: Letting your dog play with an old shoe would, most likely, make your dog think all shoes can be chewed on.
Keep your dog busy. If your dog gets bored, chances are he will find something to do and we don’t always like the choices our dogs make. Keep your dog busy both physically and mentally, that way he will stay out of trouble.
If your dog is teething, give him something to ease his pain. Freeze a washcloth and let him chew on it. Or give him something else that you don’t mind him chewing on.
As for the things that he should leave alone, make them taste poorly. There are sprays and the like that you can buy that will deter your dog from chewing on certain things.
If you do catch your dog chewing on something he is not supposed to be chewing on, make a loud sudden noise, this should stop him.
However, if you do not catch him as he is chewing, there is nothing you can do about it. If you enter the room and see the damaged table, well, too late. If you punish your dog now it will do no good. He will be at a complete loss of why you are so upset. He might understand that you are upset because of the table, but not because of what he did to the table.
